In this part of the country you will find the southern province of America, called Tierra del Fuego (The Land of Fire) also known as The End of the World.
This area is now a tourist destination of excellence. With wide offers, in winter the temperatures allow the practice of several sports, like alpine ski, sledge rides, and others. The ski centers have international infrastructure level, for example the Cerro Castor.
In the summer it is possible to enjoy the lakes, forest, rivers, and the Parque Nacional Tierra del Fuego, where you can find wildlife and the beautiful Fagnano and Roca lakes.
The imposing city of Ushuaia, capital of "La Isla Grande de Tierra del Fuego", offers all kinds of trips; excursions by ship, long walks by virgin territories, trekking, diving, all in contact with nature. The cruises witch travel across the glaciers, islands and bays are a must. In Tierra del Fuego province the weather is cold and humid. It is the most austral province of Argentina. It includes half of the “Tierra del Fuego” island, as well as the “De los Estados” island. It is separated of the rest of the country by the “Magallanes” strait. The island got its name from the Portuguese navigator Magallanes, who sailed through the named Straits, and observeed flames on the coast.
The original inhabitants of the island, the Onas, have unfortunately desappeared, after being persecuted and exterminated by the conquerors.
The North zone of the territory is formed by a plain waved with good quality of grass. The southern zone has several mountainous cords covered by coihue, lenga, ñire and calafate forests.
Their coasts are surrounded by the “Mar Argentino”, part of the South Atlantic Ocean. In the north of the “Tierra Del Fuego” island there are smooth “morrénicas” hills that they keep testimony from the “cuartaria” galciation. The marine coasts are low and sandy, which are risen towards the south. The southern portion of the island is crossed of this the west by the southern section of the Andes Mountain Range, being the mount Cornú, the greatest height of the zone with 1490 meters.
The perennial forest predominates. The most common species is the sour cherry, that it reaches about 35 meters height. Other species are ñire and lenga.
Among the fauna we find the smaller ferret, “zorrino patagónico”, “huillín” or “lobito del río patagónico”, “gato huiña”, “zorro patagónico”, “rata amizclera”, beaver, silverplated fox.
The End of The Wolrd is very demanded during the austral summer (december - march) and the hostels are rapidly overbooked. We recommend to book a hostel in Ushuaia with time in advance, even excursions or tours, and transportation to and within the island.
